ANGEL STRINGS MINISTRY SEPTEMBER NEWSLETTER

If it is, you are not alone. As Christians we talk about reading the Word, spending time in the Word, studying the Word. We may even refer to our Bible as the Word of God…but then you stumble over that incredible scripture in the first chapter of John’s Gospel …

“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things came into being through him, and without him not one thing came into being. What has come into being in him was life, and the life was the light of all people…And the Word became flesh and lived among us, and we have seen his glory, the glory as of a father’s only son, full of grace and truth.” —John 1:1-4, 14

And there it is…the Word is much, much more than the printed pages of the Bible. Perhaps we should reframe it in our mind this way: The Bible isn’t the Word itself, but it does indeed reveal the Word to us, because through it we come to know God in the revelation of his Son, Jesus Christ. When we read, learn, and experience who Jesus is, we also are introduced to God, the Father and Creator. The Holy Spirit, given by Jesus, inscribes the Word on our heart to inspire us to be more Christlike in this sinful, mortal flesh of ours that bears the trace of the Father’s finger, who made us in the image of the Holy Trinity.

I’ve been listening to an Audible book recently that is a biography on Tim Keller, a pastor I admire for having bridged orthodox Christianity with evangelism and social justice. The book speaks about the many teachers and mentors in his life that taught him how to read Jesus in every scripture of both the Old and New Testaments. For example: we have often seen Jesus referenced as the New Adam or the New Moses, but do you read all scripture that way? But, when you read about King David, do you then think of Jesus as the King of Kings? Or when you read about Abraham called to be a light to the nations, do you think of Jesus as the better Abraham who is the light itself? After all, Jesus is the fulfillment of all the Law and the Prophets, right?

Jesus is the Word, present before creation and still present now as our Risen Lord. Seeing and reading the Scriptures as the revelation of Jesus makes the Bible all about who God is, what God has done, what God continues to do, in love to make a Way for us. This means that the Bible is not so much an instruction book for our life; the Bible is an account of the God who gives us life here and hereafter…and Jesus shows us what that life looks like in the flesh. And that Word made flesh is still at work in and among us by the Holy Spirit. That’s right…even in you—you bear the imprint of God, after all.

Pretty amazing stuff, isn’t it? Definitely so much more than only a book with printed pages…

*The first 10 minutes of each Zoom session will be a time for us to briefly check in with each other, building our relationships. Each person who chooses can share a Praise moment (a Godwink or highpoint in the past week), a Pardon moment (a moment for which you need God’s forgiveness, need to forgive someone else or yourself), and a Prayer request (this can also be added to our Members Only Prayer list online).

*Each month, in addition to our topic/scripture/book selection, we will have a featured style of prayer to explore as well.

*Under Members Only on the website (this area is private to only our group), we will have the Prayer List, so we can be praying for each other; and we will have a contact list with your name/birthday/email/cell phone/address so that you can reach out to each other by text or sending cards or maybe even pair up with a prayer/accountability partner.
